About Compare the States
Compare the States launched in 2018 with a simple goal: collect all the data available on the 50 U.S. states and put it in one place. The United States is one country, but it is vast and strikingly varied. For every resident, the state you live in is one of the biggest influences on your quality of life, your financial situation, and the rights and duties you hold.
Take the range: California is home to roughly 40 million people, while Wyoming has fewer than 600,000. Whatever its size, each of us is deeply shaped by what happens at the state level, and too few of us watch closely the officials who run our states and write their rules. We hope this site gives you a clearer view of your state — what it does well and where it could improve — and that it encourages you to reach out to your state officials and speak up on the issues that matter most to you. Those issues are nearly always shaped more by state government than by national politics.
